About IRIS

My name is David McLoughlin, the founder of IRIS; Image Research & Identification Services, with over thirty-five years experience of picture research , both as a freelance and as an in-house archivist, for such companies as The Photo Source, Sky News and The Press Association.

My specialisations include identifying photographs of military, espionage, transport, crime, or social unrest, dating from the advent of photography in the 1840’s to the 1970’s, that have no captions, little in the way of captioning or incorrect captioning. I undertake all the research, caption or re-caption the images, and include a comprehensive keyword spread. This will make the images more visible to your clients, increase the amount of available metadata with a corresponding increase in your sales volumes. To know more about these services, please contact me with the form below.

If you are a member of the public with the same types of images, but you have not the time to undertake your own research, IRIS will research and identify those images for you. Many families around the UK, Europe and the United States have long military service traditions, and the photographs that correspond to that service. Almost all photography during the two World Wars was heavily censored so finding out what they might have been doing, where they were and when they were there is a difficult process. You may have a lot more information than you realise to assist in finding out details of their war-time or peace-time service record. If you would like to know much more about your families service, please contact me on the form below.

For companies who simply do not have the staff or the time to undertake such research, IRIS can provide an invaluable service. And for members of the public, who may not have either the time or the skill-set to undertake such research, IRIS can bring their family history home to them.

In addition, I undertake military service document research. If you wish to about your ancestor's military service, then I can undertake all the research and provide you with a folder with as much info as can tell the story behind their service in time of war or peace.

For any of these options, contact me using the form below.

HOW CAN I HELP?

IMAGE IDENTIFICATION

Identifying historical black & white images, full captioning and keywords.
Correcting out-dated or erroneous information.
Specialities include military/warfare, espionage, crime, social unrest, transport, early entertainment (1840's to 1970's) and architecture.

If you are an smaller image library of under one million images, then one off fees for individual picture identification can be discussed, as can fees for batch identification.

If you are an archive over one million images, then a quarterly paid consultancy fee will give you a dedicated researcher for an entire day, researching and identifying images for you. No wages to pay; no dealing with NI or Tax; no ongoing staff training. No expenses save the one off, quarterly paid consultancy fee. An increase in profit margins and for an acceptable amount.

I also undertake identification of images for members of the public of
military history of all periods, public unrest, crime, espionage, transport, architecture, popular entertainment up to 1970 and sport up to 1970. My rates are £25 per day, pic picture searched. I have helped many people identify all sorts of photographs and postcards that they had little or no information on.

I provide a talk to museum staff on how to do picture research without using the internet.
This talk is two hours and advises museum researchers on how to locate usable images for displays or special events, without going through the internet, but instead looking to other sources, within the community. This is designed to be informative, lively, fun and encourages your staff to engage with the local community.

PICTURE RESEARCH FOR MULTI-MEDIA PLATFORMS, MAGAZINES, BOOK PUBLISHERS, TELEVISION AND FILM

I am now undertaking full picture researches for the above platforms. If you have a book on WWII or the Great War, or a magazine article of a rare type of motorbike; a film star of the 1920's or the Olympic Games in Antwerp, then I can help with professional, thorough and timely searches to give you the best choice of images to meet your needs. With expertise in military history of all periods, public unrest, crime, espionage, transport, architecture, popular entertainment up to 1970 and sport up to 1970, I can cover a wide range of stills requirements. With over thirty five years experience as both a freelance picture searcher and as an in-house archivist and senior picture researcher, I will be able to meet what ever requirements you have, and within budget constraints.

MILITARY SERVICE SEARCHES

Many people have relatives or ancestors who saw military service, in the Army, Navy, Airforce or Marines, but they have little or no idea of where they served or even the rank or awards they achieved during their service. I can find their story for you and tell you what they did, and where they went. Those who served are often understandably reluctant to discuss what they went through during their military service. And now there is a justifiable sense of urgency about finding these stories as those who served in whatever capacity during WWII are either leaving us all too soon, or are unable to tell their stories any more. I can at least let families know where they served and what they did, and there are regimental sites who may then be able to provide more intimate tales of these men and women who served.
